Chapter 01
Buffing is maintenance, not rescue
High speed buffing is a maintenance operation. Its job is to keep the finish that is already on the floor in good condition, which is a far cheaper proposition than restoring one that has been left.
A floor kept on a daily or weekly maintenance program needs stripping far less often. That is the whole economic argument for the program.

Wet versus dry
There are two techniques and they are not interchangeable. The right one depends on the finish already down, the type of soil on it, and how much time the building can give up.
Matching method to floor rather than to whichever machine happens to be on the truck is what separates a maintained floor from a scuffed one.
Chapter 03
When a floor is past buffing
Sometimes polishing is the wrong answer. When the finish has worn through in the traffic lanes, or when repeated coats have yellowed and built up unevenly, the honest call is stripping and recoating.
Saying so costs a conversation. Buffing over a floor that needs stripping costs the same money twice.
Hard surfaces that are not VCT
Marble and stone buffing, and vinyl and linoleum buffing, each need their own pad, their own speed and their own realistic expectation of shine.
Stone in particular will not take the same finish as a vinyl tile, and treating it as though it will is how permanent damage happens.
